Developmental Editing Services

Shape your story.

Developmental Editing

Writing a book is an incredible feat, whether you’re a first time author or a seasoned pro. And as the writer, you know your book better than anyone. But will the readers follow along? Or maybe you’re struggling with a certain aspect of your book—plot holes, clunky pacing, or characters who just don’t sound right. This is where developmental editing comes in.

Depending on your needs, I will:

  • Examine the book as a whole. I will look at things like consistency, characterization, pacing, and plot. I will leave comments and suggestions throughout the manuscript, but I will not edit the text directly.

  • Provide you with a detailed editorial letter and a follow-up consultation to discuss any questions you might have.

Substantive Editing

Are you looking for something more hands-on than a developmental edit, but you’re not quite ready for a full copy edit? You’ve come to the right place! During a substantive edit, I will look at your manuscript at the chapter, paragraph, and sentence levels. I’ll partner with you to make sure your writing carries your readers through the story just the way you like.

Depending on your needs, I will:

  • Review each section or chapter for voice, consistency, organization, and flow. I will make suggestions and edits directly in the manuscript file using Track Changes in Microsoft Word.

  • Provide you with an editorial letter and a cleaned up file with all changes implemented or discarded upon your review.

Frequently Asked Questions

“Do you do copy editing (correcting spelling, grammar, etc.)?”

I generally don’t offer copy editing services, no. However, if you have something in mind, feel free to send me a message via the form on my Contact Me page. I’m happy to consider your project and see if we can work something out. Alternatively, if I know of a copy editor who’d be a great fit for you, I can put you in touch with them.

“I haven’t written my story yet, but I want guidance before I start. What should I do?”

Let’s talk about it! This is something I handle on a case-by-case basis. Some people need a few hours of a brainstorming session, some people need a writing coach throughout the course of the project—you get the idea. If I feel that I can provide you with what you need, I’ll send you some ideas on how we can move forward; otherwise, I’ll recommend other editors or writing coaches who are more suitable for you. At the end of the day, I want you to succeed, even if it’s not with me specifically!

“What if I don’t know what kind of editing I’m looking for?”

That’s perfectly fine! We can talk about it during your free consultation. I’m confident we’ll be able to put together the perfect package just for you.

“Can you edit a sample of my work before I agree to a contract?”

Yes! I offer a free 1,000-word sample edit for every project so you can see if my editing style will suit you. However, if the sample is not representative of the full manuscript, I reserve the right to reach out and renegotiate the project terms. If we are unable to reach a new agreement, I will refund your initial deposit.

“I’m not comfortable sharing my full manuscript without a non-disclosure agreement. Will you sign one?”

Don’t worry, I will never share any part of your manuscript without your permission. I have an NDA I can provide if needed; I also have many protections written into my editorial contract, which I’m happy to discuss in more detail.

“Do you offer discounts?”

Occasionally, I will run promotions for my services at a discounted rate. More information will be posted during those campaign periods. If you’re interested, go ahead and send me a message via the contact form, and I can add your preferred email to a mailing list. (Don’t worry, I won’t spam you!)

“I have a question not listed here!”

Let’s chat about it!

Rates

Every manuscript deserves individual care. After a free consultation and a review of your full manuscript to ensure we are on the same page (ha!), I will provide you with cost and time estimates. My rates are in line with The EFA's rate chart, and I charge on a per-project basis. I require a 50% deposit before beginning each project, with the rest to be received upon project completion. Once I receive the final payment, I’ll send over your materials within 24 hours.
